Montreal Riots after Defeating Boston Bruins in support of Earth Day

Montreal fans riot when the Canadiens win important hockey games (or when Axel Rose is in town). It's a fact of life in modern times, it seems. Because, you know, what better way to celebrate your city than to burn it to the ground, right?

For those who haven't heard, after watching the Montreal Canadiens the Boston Bruins in a pivotal game seven, hockey fans poured into the streets and quickly destroyed several police cars, vandalized buildings and made away with loot and swag for which they did not pay.

At least, in the world of Small Market Sports, as it states in today's comic strip, there might be a bit of a positive (albeit a huge reach) as the world celebrates Earth Day.

Happy Earth Day, everyone. And go Habs go!

Relocating Team Small Market Sports to Hamilton, Ontario

Not unlike the Montreal Expos, we're relocating out of Montreal. Unlike the Montreal Expos, however, we won't be moving to Washington D.C. No, we're moving to Ontario. Hamilton, to be specific.

We had been wandering around the area looking for a place that fits us downtown conveniences without the overwhelming big city life. It also needed to have access to a roller derby league. What can I tell you? My wife wants to contiune her roller derby career. :)

We did check other areas in the region: Toronto was too, well, Toronto, and Mississauga was too, well, Toronto. So we decided that Hamilton, howntown of the Montreal Canadiens farm team, the Bulldogs, would be our new stomping grounds.

We'll be jetting from here sometime around May 1st, give or take a day, so during that time updates will be sporadic at best, if at all.

Thanks in advance for your understanding, sports fans!

BTW, the Habs beat the Bruins and lead the best of seven series 1-0! Woot!

All the Double-Double Coffee Containers Are in Montreal

I am not sure anyone outside of Canada will get the reference to a double-double without an explanation. Hell, when I visited a friend in Toronto some 10-15 years back, I was absolutely culture shocked by the whole thing and I'm from Montreal (it's an English Canadian thing). At any rate, a double-double is basically Tim Horton speak for a coffee with two creams and two sugars.

Also, I am not 100% sure on the credit for quoted the hockey gag in today's comic strip. I found an article linking the "all the cups are in Montreal" gag to comedian Sugar Sammy, so until someone tells me otherwise, I'm going with it (and if I am way off base and you DO know who should get the kudos of comedy, let me know!)

Boy... this is a lot of set-up for a simple little comic strip that pokes fun at Toronto Maple Leafs hockey fans, isn't it? Yeesh, it's been a long week.

Jose Canseco's Drug Enhanced Stats Aren't Good Enough for Hall of Fame?

In an interview on ESPN's E60, Jose Canseco defended the allegations he made in his book, "Vindicated: Big Names, Big Liars, and The Battle to Save Baseball."

I'm not surprised by the allegations he's made, or the fact that he's defending them. Hey, this is the era of tell-all books, and the sensationalisation and exploitation of everyone and their brother, right?

What surprised me is that Jose Canseco suggested, and maybe rightly so, that the real reason he isn't considered to be Major League Baseball Hall of Fame material is simply his numbers don't add up (500 career home runs, he believes, is necessary to be considered).

A suggestion that I just had to incorporate into today's sports cartoon.

BTW, in some unrelated comic news, if you like to laugh and want to support the international Make a Wish Foundation, be certain to head by the Guest Strip Project twice a week for some cartoony goodness.

More unrelated sports news, this time from the world of roller derby, The Beast of the East, the first Eastern Canadian Roller Derby Tournament, will be held April 19, 2008. It will pit teams from Montreal, Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, London, and Buffalo in a day of roller derby destructiveness! And, yes, I'm attending.
